Sony Corporation will indeed participate in the construction of the TSMC chip manufacturer’s factory in Japan. Rumors about the partnership began to circulate in October, now the contract has been officially announced .
The cost of the TSMC factory is estimated at $ 7 billion. Sony will invest $ 500 million in the project, and the government will also support the creation of the factory.
The factory is expected to create about 1,500 jobs. Every month it will produce about 45 thousand 12-inch wafers with chips.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2022. The partners expect that the production of chips will not be able to start until the end of 2024.
Apparently, thanks to the partnership with TSMC, Sony wants to protect itself from a possible continuation of the chip shortage. Like other market players, the company is experiencing difficulties in supplying chips for a variety of devices, from smartphones and TVs to game consoles.
