In the second episode of the series The Witcher, one of the main characters of the novel died, for which Lauren S. Hissrich fell victim to him. The creator of the production commented on this topic.
Lauren S. Hissrich has recently faced a lot of criticism from fans of the universe created by Andrzej Sapkowski. It’s all about the introduced plot changes to the source material.
Beware of spoilers later in the news!
One of the threads was the worst in the second episode of the second season of The Witcher from Netflix. As is well known, during it Geralt of Rivia was able to meet his buddies in Kaer Morhen. One of them was the well-known Eskel, whom everyone remembered as the friendly, understanding pal of the White Wolf.
In the production of Netflix, his character was completely different from Eskel, known from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, for example . This character was rude and quite annoying, and if that was not enough, she was killed in order to fuel the plot. This is how the main producer of the series, the aforementioned Hissrich, explained:
“We knew we had to kill someone in that episode,” Hissrich explained. “The very first version of the script we wrote was a brand-new Witcher we had never met before. All of a sudden we were like, ‘Oh, our audience is going to meet Coen and Lambert and Eskel and John. Who’s going to die? John is going to die.’”
“We thought about it really hard,” sh continued. “I know there are fans that love Eskel and feel like ‘Why would we do that?’ but, honestly, his death is what changes everything for Geralt. I think it propels Geralt’s need to figure out what’s going on with Ciri, and to do it fast, because he knows he’s going to risk losing her and his brothers if he doesn’t.”
According to the statements made during a special program revealing new details about the second season of The Witcher (available below), the writers originally planned to create an unprecedented monster hunter that would turn into a “tree monster” – the idea was abandoned because the producers wanted to that the death of the second episode would cause a lot of emotions in the viewer, and not be just a formality.
