The first Witcher has fourteen springs on his neck. At the end of October it was its fourteenth anniversary, so this is a good time to tell yourself straight – this game deserves a remake the most.
My memories of the first Witcher were quite strange. I heard a lot about his phenomenon, especially from the lips of native players who were delighted with the adventure of the White Wolf on the trail – it’s safe to say that positive opinions squashed the negative ones. The positive reception and considerable interest in CD Projekt RED encouraged the team to create The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, and it was him that started my story with Geralt of Rivia.
After buying a copy of the second Witcher for PC, I originally did not know that interested parties would be able to import their progress from the first Witcher, and thus learn the consequences of the choices made during the bloody fight between the Order of the Flaming Rose and the Scoia’tael. Once I had recaptured the La Valette castle and arrived in Flotsam, I started to think about how many flavors and references I could have missed without getting to know the first game in the series, so without further reflection I made the decision to put The Witcher 2 on the shelf, buy The Witcher 1 and start everything from zero.
What if you were to start all over again?
The first contact with the Polish hit of 2007 was really tough. After a rather pleasant – whether in terms of gameplay or graphics – a walk around Flotsam in “two”, I had great difficulty finding myself in a production that was in many ways outdated. And let me just remind you that I had the “pleasure” to associate with it in 2011, so it has not been so long since its official premiere. For example, Mass Effect , Crysis or BioShock , released in 2007, were more playable than the item discussed today.
What rejected me the most? The first impression was definitely spoiled by the Kaer Morhen project itself, although it was not better – the next locations we discovered looked very poor (only the forests where Scoia’tael units lived looked very atmospheric in my opinion) – starting from the unremarkable Vizima, through the swamps and ending in dungeons glowing empty.
In addition, to this day, I wonder who came up with the idea of implementing such a strange combat system, consisting in holding the left mouse button for a long time – or at least in the initial phase of the game, because then all combinations were added. It was original, but did it pass the exam? In my opinion – definitely not, because he was more rejecting than encouraging to continue playing.
Old but (not) spring?
The witcher defended himself with one thing – a damn interesting universe and a great script. The ability to learn about the story, which is like a swamp, makes us forget about the disadvantages (or get used to them – the situation with the above-mentioned combat system) and focus on what good we can get from this story.
This is how I approached the first installment of the best-selling CD Projekt RED series. I got to know the beginning of the Butcher’s adventure with Blaviken while completing most of the missions, but for no treasure I would not return to this game – or at least in the form it currently appears in. Playing it in – rounding off the date – 2022 is a real torment that only the most persistent ones could handle. So a group of people that I do not belong to.
Therefore, I believe that the first Witcher deserves a full-fledged remake. It got Final Fantasy VII , Resident Evil 2 (2019) , Mafia: The final edition and we all know what came of it. All the productions mentioned a moment ago were very popular, so I think it would be the same with the RED production from 2007. Unless, of course, it would be a remake prepared on the latest version of the RED Engine.
CD Projekt RED, come on!
Personally, I cannot imagine a situation in which Polish developers would announce a remaster of The Witcher. As I mentioned in the above paragraphs, the beginning of Geralt of Rivia’s adventure is lame in many phases of the game, because most of the mechanics need a solid renovation – with an emphasis on this unusual combat system, from which almost no player with the said story can draw any advantages .
Refreshing the “one”, the sum of the least popular part of the CDPR brand, currently available only on personal computers, could also give another life to the second (this could also be transferred to the current generation consoles) and the third “Wieś”, so well … I will not be surprised if in the decade now we actually get a remake straight from the REDs.
