And cut out dialogs.
It would seem that The Witcher 3 no longer hides any secrets, but the inquisitive player managed to find one more curiosity – and at the very beginning of the game. It’s about the Missing in Action quest that probably every Wild Hunt fan knows.
In order to have the full context, we need to recall the story of the quest. The mission takes place in White Orchard. Geralt meets the Temerian Dune, who is looking for a brother named Bastien, who went missing during the recent battle with the Nilfgaardians. The search for a soldier started on the battlefield ends with success – it turns out that he is hiding in a wooden hut together with a Nilfgaardian deserter who saved his life. Geralt can convince Dune to take under the roof not only his brother, but also the “enemy” – or advise him to leave Black to his fate.
This is where youtuber Neon Knight comes in and his interesting discovery . At the beginning of the game, when Geralt wakes up from his dream of Kaer Morhen and sets out with Vesemir in search of Yennefer, he passes the camp where Dune usually sits. However, you can only meet him there after visiting the inn in White Orchard, so in the first minutes of the game there is simply no man there.
Dune’s absence from the camp at the very beginning of the game, however, is apparently a derivative of the developers cutting the content. Using the files left by the creators, Neon Knight managed to bring the Temerian back to the camp at the beginning of the adventure, which resulted not only in the possibility of earlier starting and completing the quest in full (which, quite amusingly, was associated with leaving Vesemir waiting for Geralt by the road, when the witcher went looking for brother Dune), but it also unlocked new lines of dialogue .
” This one seems to have found an interesting interlocutor ,” says Geralt as he passes the camp, alluding to the fact that Dune is talking to his missing brother’s dog.
“He’s talking to the dog, you’re talking to yourself … I don’t know what’s worse ,” replies Vesemir, noting that if Geralt decides to help the Temerian, he will be waiting for him.
The first dialogue with Dun is also different than in the official version of the game . As Geralt has not yet come to the inn, where he learns the first clue about Yennefer’s whereabouts, at the beginning he asks the Temerian if he has seen a black-haired sorceress somewhere. All the cut lines – a slightly changed beginning of the Wild Hunt – can be heard and seen from 1:50 in the material above.
Why did CD Projekt decide to move the quest? Most likely because distracting the player with a side task in the first seconds of the game does not seem to be the best way to start the adventure.
Youtuber also found a few other interesting facts about the Missing in Action quest. The most interesting – apart from the above – seems to be the fact that the Nilfgaardian defector Rhosyn was most likely hiding his rank, because the advertisement nearby shows that he is not a private soldier at all, but a general.
