Industry analyst Michael Pachter believes Sony should make Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment an acquisition target
Rumors have recently re-emerged about the possibility that Warner Bros. Games is on sale, and according to market analyst Michael Pachter it would be a particularly suitable acquisition for Sony , which should attempt the move.
For a long time there has been talk of the possibility that Warner Bros. intends to spin off its videogame division to sell it and, usually, Microsoft was considered as the most suitable company for a maneuver of this magnitude.
Pachter instead sees it differently, with Sony that could be more suitable for such an acquisition, or at least it could be a more favorable opportunity for the latter than for the other.
“I think if Sony were really smart, they’d make a move for Warner Bros. Interactive,” said Wedbush Morgan’s well-known market analyst. However, he also added a condition: “But Warner Bros. Interactive isn’t worth full price without the rights to exploit the DC Comics franchises”, so otherwise the maneuver could be too expensive and not very profitable.
“If you can’t make Warner Bros. properties like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and DC Comics, then it doesn’t really make sense to buy Warner Bros. Interactive,” said Pachter. “There are brands there that are really good. You know, like Mortal Kombat and Injustice, but Injustice has DC characters.”
Therefore, the acquisition according to Pachter would be particularly suitable for Sony, but only if the famous licenses linked to the WB Interactive teams were also included, otherwise it might not make much sense. Just recently, the possibility has resurfaced that Warner Bros. plans to sell their development teams, with Sony and Microsoft listening .
