The Russians intend to completely eliminate any information about the LGBTQIA + community from their country. Officials are seeking to tighten the law that has existed since 2013, according to which it is a crime to make reports of “non-traditional sexual relationships”.
The latest proposal of Russian politicians will definitely meet with commentary in various parts of the world, because it is another step in spreading the lack of acceptance towards non-heteronormative people. According to the new arrangements, content showing a “non-traditional lifestyle” or “rejection of family values” will be treated by Russians in the same way as pornography, promotion of violence or inciting racial, ethnic or religious tensions.
In October, further orders aimed at limiting content showing members of the LGBTQIA+ community were processed, presenting it as part of a wider fight against the West for civilizational values and linking it to the invasion of Ukraine. As soon as the ordinance enters into force, and has been unanimously voted by the Russian Duma, officials will be able to block all information on the Internet relating to the issue of sexual minorities, prohibit the presentation of films, games or other cultural texts presenting a positive image of a non-heteronormative person.
Citizens who break the law may be fined from 50,000 to even 400,000 rubles, and residents of other countries may be expelled from Russia. The bill now needs to pass the Federation Council, the upper house of the Russian parliament, before it can be signed by Vladimir Putin.
Quite unexpectedly, the first deputy chairman of the State Duma Education Committee, Yana Lantratov, referred to the issue of games, listing productions, in her opinion, promoting LGBT.
“Assassin’s Creed, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Assassin’s Creed: Rogue, Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Borderlands, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Life Is Strange, The Last of Us, The Last of Us: Part 2, Fallout, Apex Legends, RimWorld, Overwatch and others. All these games have gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual characters, ”said Lantratova.
In an interview with Gazeta.Ru , the representative of the Russian Education Commission solemnly stated that in the titles mentioned “non-traditional relationships are presented as something attractive”. Similar behavior is also promoted by … The Sims 3:
“Also the game that many girls love, The Sims 3, where the player has to create a family and has a fairly wide choice of partners. The hero also has the ability to kiss a same-sex friend, go out with him, fall in love with him, and even start a family and have children! Occasionally, the protagonist may be approached by people of the same sex. It means that the child who plays it shows this behavior as the norm and gives the opportunity to try out an alternative scenario of family relationships,” admitted Lantratova.
The Russians want to ban games with “unconventional union propaganda” when they are presented as “the norm, as something attractive”, or when users are given the opportunity to play the role of the opposite sex.
