After Metroid Prime 3 the team looked into the possibility of a strategy game in the Metroid universe, but it never got the green light.
Retro Studios studied the possibility of creating a Metroid Tactics after the release of Metroid Prime 3 , as revealed by Paul Tozour, former developer of the Nintendo studio. It would be a prequel to the saga and its description is that of an XCOM but set in the Metroid universe . The game, however, did not go ahead and the team would go on to create Donkey Kong Country Returns on the Wii, in addition to the remastered Metroid Prime: Trilogy collection.
According to the video Did You Know Gaming , after ending the Metroid Prime series , confirms that some members of the studio presented the idea of a tactical game for Wii that took place long before other Metroids , specifically at the time when Samus Aran he separates from the Chozo, finds humanity, and becomes a bounty hunter.
“It’s basically XCOM, it was XCOM in the Metroid Universe,” says Tozour. In the internal document it is indicated that we would control Samus, an elite group of the Galactic Federation and other bounty hunters to fight against the Space Pirates. “Throughout the adventure the player would be able to hire new units, upgrade them with new armor, weapons, abilities,” while Samus and other key characters would have unique abilities vital to combat. Firaxis ‘ Marvel’s Midnight Suns , released this month, is also “an XCOM ” but with Marvel characters.
Didn’t make it to Nintendo
As interesting as this idea may sound, the project was not greenlit by veterans at Retro Studios, and it didn’t make it to Nintendo . “If there was a way to submit something within Retro that would go to the other end of the chain, to Nintendo, and get approved, I never knew, and no one at Retro knew,” Tozour says in the video.
