He talked about how difficult it is to launch a game like MGS2 after the attack that shocked the world.
Metal Gear Solid 2 received critical acclaim and applauded the stealth tactical gameplay. Its drama and narrative set the standard, being totally relevant to the point of becoming a praised and loved game even in modern times. Some elements of the game have been known to have changed at the last minute due to the 9/11 attacks , it just so happens that after this tragedy, the stress and challenge of managing the release of such a game affected Hideo Kojima to the point of who almost left Konami.
In the interview with Shuka Yamada for IGN, the game designer indicated that a conversation with Konami’s president, Kagemasa Kozuki , was what convinced Kojima to stay back then, further describing an awkward and difficult situation after Metal Gear Solid 2, due to be released in the fall of 2001, contained footage of the World Trade Center and other sites that were attacked on September 11.
9/11 took place in 2001 right before the release of Metal Gear Solid 2. We’d just sent off the master, but the game featured both the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. It seemed impossible to release the game. I was called to the board of directors and they all turned pale when I explained the situation. Nobody would tell me what to do, with the exception of Mr. Kozuki, who tackled the issue.
As I thought about what to do, I went to speak with Mr. Kozuki about possibly quitting the company. That’s when he told me: ‘When this game comes out and society has their say about it, they’ll be talking about you, its creator, and me, the person who sold it. I doubt they’ll say anything about anyone else. What will you do? I’m ready for whatever happens.’
When I heard how far he was willing to go, I made the firm decision that we’d release it together. The rest is history.
Kojima indicated in the interview
After the release, Kojima required an extreme recovery. “I completely exhausted myself, and I always end up in a horrible state when I finish making a game,” he explained. Also, he said that with the first Metal Gear Solid he went through several hospitals to fully recover. If we remember, this is not the first time that Kojima has to alter his work, at The Game Awards 2022 , on stage, the designer indicated that he had to make changes with the story of Death Stranding 2 , since he started writing the story before the pandemic hit, but when he had to experience something so similar to what the first game had predicted, he quickly quit his job on the sequel and started anew. “Fiction changes when something so big happens”Kojima told IGN .
