Sony plans to develop PlayStation Studios, but is also getting rid of GSN Games. The company is not one of the most famous Japanese teams – although its representatives are involved in creating games, they were subordinated to Sony Pictures Entertainment.
In 2019, Sony took over the Game Show Network, which also owned GSN Games. The creators were not included in the group of PlayStation Studios developers, but they worked under the supervision of Sony Pictures, mainly due to their activities. The team creates mobile and online casinos where customers can play solitaire, poker or bingo.
The studio’s catalog also included Wheel of Fortune – it was a position based on the “Wheel of Fortune”, an American game show for which Sony was responsible since 2002.
Sony Pictures Entertainment has sold GSN Games studio for $ 1 billion. The transaction is a combination of cash and Scopely shares (50-50). As a result, the company will become a significant, although still minority shareholder.
We can suspect that GSN Games associated with gambling did not match the strategy of PlayStation Studios, therefore a decision was made to sell.
“GSN Games has been a great endeavor for Sony over the past 14 years and we are proud of the experience the team continues to deliver to players around the world. Getting to know the Scopely team, we knew that we had found the right organization to support and accelerate the company’s development. We are confident that they will take GSN Games to new heights, and SPE is pleased to be a minority shareholder in Scopely as a result of this transaction. ”- Ravi Ahuja, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s global television studio and development.
