Cliff Bleszinski claims that Epic Games got rid of the saga because they didn’t know how to continue it and to finance future projects. He also says that he is not satisfied with The Coalition games.
Gears of War is a saga that has always been linked to Xbox, although this was actually created by Epic Games as an exclusive for Microsoft consoles. In an exclusive interview with IGN, series lead designer Cliff Bleszinski shared his thoughts on the 2012 sale of Gears of War to Xbox. Grosso modo , the creative has stated that, from his point of view, the franchise was sold because Epic Games was not at all clear how to continue it.
“I honestly think once Lee Perry [Gameplay Designer, Gears of War 2], myself, and Rod Ferguson [Producer, Gears of War] left, I believe that Epic didn’t really know what to do with the franchise,” he says. Bleszinski, who believes the sale helped Epic fund and fuel his future projects. “They hadn’t shipped a game in a while. The [Unreal] engine was doing rather well, but they were growing and they probably needed the income even though they really didn’t know what to do with the future of the franchise,” he adds. Following the sale, The Coalition studio took over from Epic and developed Gears of War 4 and Gears 5; Currently it is believed that they are already working on the sixth installment .
“As much as I loved Tim and Mark [Rein, VP of Epic Games] and we’re still in touch, but when the IP was sold to Microsoft the only phone call I got was from Phil Spencer. Right? And that’s Phil. Phil is, as they say, a gentleman and a scholar,” he adds.
Bleszinski is not satisfied with the latest games
Bleszinski added during the interview that he doesn’t think The Coalition video games have “the same heart” as the original trilogy . “What I will say about the last ones is that at the end of one of the last ones, they had the player choose which character lives or dies. And I was like, ‘Man, are you serious? We made a commitment to Dom dying. We made a commitment to that María died'”, he concludes in his statements.
