Naoki Yoshida reveals new details of how they organized the story of Endwalker, and has doubts about “the new continuity” of the plot in Final Fantasy 14.
With Final Fantasy XVI facing the final stretch of its development , Square Enix is clear about the future of the legendary JRPG saga . And the MMO Final Fantasy 14 is an indisputable part of the years to come.
A few years have passed since the release of the game, but Naoki Yoshida is clear that he still has some time left. Without going any further, the MMO has guaranteed content for the next five years .
Last November, the latest expansion for Final Fantasy XIV, Endwalker , was released, the end of which marks a before and after at the plot level. Naoki Yoshida talks about it in The Verge .
It’s been a busy week for the veteran producer, who has been asked about future ideas for Final Fantasy XIV. Laughing, he affirms that he still doesn’t have everything clear… because the spontaneous factor is fundamental in his way of working .
Endwalker perfectly concluded the story started in A Realm Reborn. With the 7.0 update. on the way (and new expansions) , fans are wondering about the new threats that will plague Eorzea .
Pay attention to the little hint (generally speaking) that Yoshida gives about the future plots for the MMO:
“The world is always full of mysteries,” Yoshida said via email. “And, even in real-world affairs, some unbelievably sorrowful incidents do happen. They may not necessarily be from some overwhelming threat; they could be horrors born from personal ideology, or tragedies caused by a concentration of power, or things that arise as a result of beliefs based on religion or education. So as we clumsily try our best to understand and overcome various barriers between ourselves, we’re still a long way off from where we want to be.”
In that sense, Yoshida believes that Endwalker is a new beginning for the MMO . At the same time, it works as a grand conclusion to the plots of Final Fantasy XIV.
All those who have finished Endwalker will know very well where the story of the MMO is going. Without a doubt, in these years we have only scratched the surface of Eorzea … and there is much more waiting for us out there.
“Things are the most fun when I’m fantasizing and imagining what sort of things I can make, and the process of shaping those thoughts into reality is when it’s very painful,” he said. “So please give me a little more time to enjoy my fantasy :P.”
Final Fantasy XIV is available on PS5, PS4, and PC .
