Aaron Dubois, lead visual effects artist at Obsidian Entertainment, says on his LinkedIn profile that he is working on ‘Avowed’ using the Epic Games engine.
Obsidian Entertainment may be developing Avowed using Unreal Engine 5. The information was discovered in the LinkedIn page of Obsidian’s Lead VFX Artist – Aaron Dubois -.
Dubois is reportedly working on Avowed using Unreal 5’s Niagara VFX. Niagara is one of Epic Games’ graphics engine technologies.

Obsidian Entertainment was actually listed by Epic as one of the studios working on Unreal Engine 5 projects , but this wasn’t necessarily confirmation that Avowed would be built with that development engine. After all, Obsidian also announced The Outer Worlds 2 last year – with the latter being further away from release, it was a more likely candidate.
A first-person RPG set in the world of Pillars of Eternity
The official information about Avowed is scarce, beyond the brief trailer that was shown at the July 2020 Xbox Games Showcase , the event in which some of the first party games in development for Xbox Series X were presented (at that time) . Xbox Series S was not even known at the time). On the official website they only say that it is “an epic first person RPG set in the fantastic world of Eora” . They refer to the Pillars of Eternity universe and its sequel.
Epic Games released Unreal Engine 5 to the public on April 5. The graphics engine is being adopted by many studios inside and outside of Xbox Game Studios for projects like Senua’s Sacrifice: Hellblade II , the upcoming The Witcher , the new project from The Coalition (makers of Gears ), BioWare’s next Mass Effect , and many more.
