Gans, who directed the first Silent Hill in 2006, comments that he has a new independent story adapted to the present day.
In 2020 French director Christophe Gans revealed that he was planning to adapt Koei Tecmo ‘s horror game Project Zero / Fatal Frame and work on a new Silent Hill movie . Gans directed Silent Hill (2006) , an adaptation of the original Konami game that is considered “good” when compared to other movies based on video games. In conversations with Jeuxvideo he has talked about the project and his intention to release it in 2023.
“I am working on the movie. The years of COVID-19 have passed and we have been forced to stay at home. I had the opportunity to write two scripts; that of a new Silent Hill movie that will be totally independent of the previous two movies and will be respectful to how Silent Hill has evolved ,” says Gans, who recalls that most games are self-contained stories. ” Silent Hill is a bit like The Twilight Zone – On the edge of reality -, The Fourth Dimension , a place where anything can happen.
A version adapted to the new times
” I have worked on a Silent Hill from the year 2023 because it will be released next year , and not the Silent Hill that I imagined in 2006. It is a Silent Hill for the current public while being very respectful of the saga. I know that Silent Hill It is a great saga of videogames and an artistic work”, says the director of Crying Freeman (1995), The pact of the wolves (2001) and Beauty and the beast (2014).
“For me, it was important to design a Silent Hill for today’s audience . It is clear that the current horror cinema is not that of 2006. It is not that this cinema was not good, but every genre goes through an evolution”, and highlights that the game saga always strayed from the standards and was ahead of its time.
It is no coincidence that Silent Hill returns to the big screen. Rumors have it that Konami is preparing new games , including a remake of Silent Hill 2 by Bloober Team. We also remind you that Silent Hill: Revelation was released in 2012 , without the participation of Gans, which received much lower reviews than the first film. “I’ve never seen it [Gans commented on Revelation two years ago]. I should have directed it [it was inspired by Silent Hill 3 , a sequel to the first] but when I understood that the producers wanted a film in the style of Resident Evil , I rejected it.. Unfortunately for the sequel the public verdict was harsh, so I don’t regret [dropping the film].”
