The previous adaptation of the book was an animated film by Satoshi Kon, director of Perfect Sadness and Millennium Actress.
Deadline sources say Cathy Yan, who directed Birds of Prey for Warner Bros. and DC Films, as well as an episode of “Heirs”, will produce and direct a TV adaptation of the novel by Japanese author Yasutaka Tsutsui.
The action of “Paprika” takes place somewhere in the near future, where observing people’s dreams and “invading” them has become one of the methods of psychotherapy. The main character is a female psychiatrist who uses this method of treatment and is forced to start searching for a stolen device that gives access to dreams.
How close the next adaptation will be to the original book or to the anime film based on it is unclear.
It is not known when the filming of the adaptation will begin, but Yan also has plans for a feature-length film, The Freshening, based on her own script. Perhaps “Paprika” will be her next project.
The series should be produced by Amazon Studios, but its representatives did not comment on the journalists’ data.
Tsutsui’s novel was published in several parts in the early nineties, and in 2006 its adaptation was released – an animated film directed by Satoshi Kon, also known for Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress and the anime series Paranoia Agent.
